A Rose in Little Five PointsA ROSE IN LITTLE FIVE POINTS follows the journey of Meredith Fields, a 25-year-old woman struggling with self-doubt, indecision, and an overactive imagination. Her idealized life clashes with the realities of her emotionally distant husband, a defiant daughter, and the rapidly changing world of the 1970’s and 80’s. Furthermore, her inability to keep alive any of the houseplants given to her by her mother-in-law, even the aloe plant, heightens her feelings of ineptitude.
Set against the backdrop of the post-Vietnam War era, the emerging AIDS epidemic, and a growing immigrant population, Meredith becomes increasingly aware of her possible role in this shifting landscape. However, it is the simple gift of a rose bush from her crotchety neighbor, Magda, and their subsequent friendship, that is a catalyst for Meredith’s exploration of her assumptions about herself and the world around her. Critical events, both personal and professional, further force Meredith to question her beliefs as well as to confront the devastating consequences of her hesitation to act. Gradually, she learns to claim her own voice. She discovers what she really wants and who she is meant to be, marking significant shifts in her relationships with her own body and her loved ones, as well as in her ability to contribute to society. A ROSE IN LITTLE FIVE POINTS portrays the complexities of personal and cultural expectations, privilege, and self-acceptance. It explores themes of motherhood, identity, civic engagement, and the resilience required to navigate the world around us. |
