Welcome to Reawakening Rebekah: The Gift of the CLAMOR Girls
Until the untimely death of her beloved father, everything Rebekah Wilkins-Standifer plans for her life has fallen easily into place, including her marriage and her rapid climb up the corporate ladder in fashion merchandising. Now, in the grip of an unrelenting depression, Rebekah struggles with even the most mundane of tasks. In the office of Dr. Myra Devoe, a psychiatrist who still believes in private practice and talk therapy in addition to the wonders of pharmaceuticals, Rebekah embarks on the journey of reclaiming her life. However, she finds it, at times, a maddening process that does not respond to her timetable, her efficiency, or her business acumen.
Additionally, Rebekah has harbored an ugly childhood secret for so long, she has forced it from her conscious memory. But it “remembers” her and threatens to dismantle the world she has so carefully constructed, where she feels secure and where her father is able to fix anything. She now vacillates between shutting off more and more of her heart and living increasingly in her head or disclosing the secret, thus allowing herself to embrace life in all its wondrous messiness. From the high-power world of top-dollar fashion merchandising accounts to group therapy sessions with the CLAMOR Girls, and from re-establishing a relationship with Casey Greer, her third grade best friend whose father molested her to testifying before a state legislature special committee on prison sentencing guidelines for sex offenders, Rebekah wavers between numbing denial and raw emotional honesty.
Why CLAMOR Girls?
There are so many things that clamor for attention in our lives. Some are worth our attention and devotion; some are not. Some enter our lives unbidden; some are invited. Reawakening Rebekah: The Gift of the CLAMOR Girls, is about six women, Celeste, Libby, Andrea, Margot, Olivia, and Rebekah, who are attempting to sort through the ravages of sexual abuse. Despite their efforts at normalcy (whatever that means), the fallout from the abuse clamors for their attention. The CLAMOR Girls find help and hope under the guidance of Dr. Myra Devoe, who consistently encourages them to worry less about the pain of digging around in their past and more about missing out on depth and quality of life by avoiding the pain.
Anyone who has been rummaging around on this earth for awhile knows that life is filled with all sorts of interesting plot twists. We never know what lies just around the bend, do we? Whether it's a delight or another deep disappointment, life is wondrously messy. And it seems the more we try to stay safe and in control, the more diminished our lives become. Reawakening Rebekah: The Gift of the CLAMOR Girls explores how lives are rent apart by unspeakable abuse and stitched back together by truth, friendship, therapy, and good meds; it is a story that celebrates triumph over great loss and testifies to the resilience of the human spirit.
